Pastoral Prayer

 Pastoral Prayer

June 29, 2008

Awesome God, You see all and You know all!  You rule over history and time yet you are neither bound nor governed by them.  We praise You because You are sovereign and You know both the beginning and the end of history—they are Yours!

In the midst of difficult times in our church and our world, we turn our eyes on Jesus, who is the same yesterday today and forever. He continues to work today through us, inviting others to know his mercy, forgiveness and salvation. We pray that that the Spirit of Christ may reach beyond our walls to affect the whole life of society. We praise you that nothing in this earth can deter or change your holy Word and your purposes to bring many to know and love you. We give thanks that you are Lord and our Lord.

We pray for our church and for the controversial decisions that were made at the General Assembly. May You give us clear direction as we respond to these decisions in faithfulness to your Word.

We pray for all who are candidates for the offices, asking that each one will seek your will in their decisions and plans.  We pray that you will give godly men and women candidates favor in the eyes of this nation, that they might be elected to serve this people well.  We thank you that we have the privilege to elect leaders through a democratic process. Thank you for our nation and for the high privilege of freedom. Let us never forget that freedom is not free.

We pray for the gospel that proclaims Jesus as Lord of life. May it be known everywhere and believed on by increasing numbers of men and women. May young and old, rich and poor, from every race, nation and language realize what Christ has done for them and join their praise with that of the whole church. Lord, use us.

We pray that Christ may strengthen men and women in their trials; in sickness, in grief, in hardship, in persecution, and in disappointment. We lift up those who are serving abroad in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere, asking for your special presence and protection. We pray for peace, that you will protect and uphold these peoples. Be especially with the widows and orphans of war.

We remember the many in our midst in need of your healing, who have medical appointments, surgeries and treatments ahead:  Sally Clark, Gail Crowther, Jinny Earnshaw, Ellie Gregory, Don MacLean, Nancy McCormack, Doris Miller, Jim Paine, Helen Pollard, and Sylvia Wilensky. Thank you that you are the God who heals. We lift them into your presence, giving thanks that you hear and answer our prayers.

We offer now our silent prayers for those joys and concerns of our hearts:

As our Lord Jesus taught us, let us pray together: Our Father. . .Amen.

                                                                            THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed by Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil;
for Thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
               forever.         Amen
