Missions

Sharing with others is a large part of the mission of our church and with the help and generosity of our members we are able to help many others, less fortunate than we, in our community.

Virginia Earnshaw - Team Chair

Redlands Migrant Ministry - Jinny Earnshaw, Team Leader
We collect toys at our Christmas Pot Luck held at our church, which are distributed to Redlands School on Pine St. in Fellsmere. Jinny Earnshaw, our clown Tinsel, has entertained the children there. Last year we took names from the "Giving Tree" and gave all of the children in the school PJs and a toy.

Teen Challenge - Bob Bordeaux, Team Leader
Teen challenge's young men and leaders have visited our church several times and have been invited to stay for a meal. Our donations help support them, and our members visit them and offer our help.

Safe Space - The congregation, along with the Presbyterian Women's Group have supported Safe Space for some time. We have sent food from our food pantry, good clothing, and other articles they can use. Since the hurricanes, we have been sending gift cards to allow them to purchase items needed for the repair of their buildings. Fred Clement has been helping in this area.

BIRP (Brevard-Indian River Presbyterians) Jinny Earnshaw representative.
Through attending BIRP meetings we have the opportunity to invite Presbyterian Missionaries to visit our church to tell us about their Mission Church and accept our donations to help them continue their work. BIRP meetings also host missionaries. We help to arrange transportation and lodging, when necessary, while they are here. Read more about BIRP Missions "One Door, Many Directions"

Outreach for Mission - We include a short informational talk in our church services on the last Sunday of each month. To acquaint our members with one of our mission projects and to bring forth ongoing mission concerns.

Feet for Food - The 1st Feet for Food walk was held on Sunday, March 9th, and was a great success. It collected $12,266, all of which stays with the Ecumenical Food Pantry. Our own church contributed a total of $1,014. Peyton Lutz was the star walker, collecting $185, with Eric Bauer a close second with $165. Thanks to all who walked and to all of their sponsors.

Thanksgiving Dinner - Jinny Earnshaw, Team Leader
The Mission Team organized a Thanksgiving Dinner held at our church to bring together those members who have no family nearby to celebrate with. Under Jinny's leadership and through the kindness of so many, it went very well and we hope to do it again this year.

Mission Trips- It is our role to be aware of and communicate information to the congregation about any mission trips that are being planned. Last year we decided to encourage the support of Christian camps for young people by sending 4 of our young people to camps. This year we hope to encourage all of our youth to attend, and help them raise the funds for this project. The current fund raising project was a  Pancake Breakfast.

Community Worship Services - Our church has participated in Thanksgiving and Easter services at St. Sebastian Church. The collections from these events go to the Ecumenical Council.

Ecumenical Council - Gloria Fennell, Mary Lou Speed, Betty Letrick and Jinny Earnshaw
Our Gloria Fennell is President of the Council. The Ecumenical Council consists of several churches here in the north county and also includes 2 churches in Barefoot Bay. EC operates the food pantry which is in the building west of the United Methodist Church of Roseland. People in the EC help man the pantry and all churches involved collect food for it. We also help people with rent, gas, electric bills, prescriptions, etc. Every cent donated is accounted for. This year's Postal Food Drive collected 34,568 lbs. of donated foods, of which 25%, 220 boxes, came to the EC's Food Pantry. Sixteen of our members, along with 7 young men from Teen Challenge, worked on the drive.  The Teen Challenge boys did most of the heavy lifting for us. The EC also distributes food to needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is a big project collecting, sorting and packaging such items as turkeys, bread, eggs and other perishables. EC will be doing this again in 2008.

Habitat for Humanity - Although we do not have a team leader for this activity, we have a few members of our congregation who help at Habitat. Some of our members volunteer in their office.

Well Project - As a result of the missionary visits we were challenged to fund the drilling of a well in Madagascar where people wash, bathe, water livestock. and drink from the same river. A well will save many lives as dysentery is the main problem. The cost of the well is $3200.We are proud to say that the ongoing generosity of those who gave pennies, nickels quarters,  dollars and checks has raised enough for a well. A job “well” done.

School Room Project
What if you couldn't read? What if there were no classrooms for our children or grandchildren to go to so they could learn. The concept of not being able to educate our youth because of the lack of floors and walls it totally foreign to us. Yet in Mozambique this is a daily problem. That is why, as a church, we are attempting to raise $3,500 to build one room of a 2 room block school. (May '08 update) We are at $1868 and building the walls one block at a time. Block by block, dollar by dollar, we will build a school room in Africa. For more about the Mozambique Mission effort (click here).
